Activities for sports fans in New York

New York might not immediately seem like the obvious choice in holiday destination for sports fans, but it has a lot to offer. If you’re determined to see as many sports-related sights as possible on your next visit to the city, then you’re in luck, because this blog has some incredible hotspots for you to try out.

Madison Square Garden

If you want to watch a sports game while you’re in New York, MSG is the place to be. Whether you want to snag some New York Knicks tickets or attend a New York Rangers hockey game, MSG is one of the most famous arenas you could attend. Even if you don’t end up inside, make sure you take a photo in front of the building to commemorate your trip.

Yankee Stadium

No big baseball fan wants to miss a trip to the Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. While the original stadium has been replaced, the existing building is still an amazing sight to behold. It has new elements but stays true to the original design of the stadium by replicating the original roofline. If you’re planning to see a game at the stadium, make sure you ride the 4 train with all the other fans. You’ll experience an atmosphere like no other and may even want to dress up in pinstripes to get in on the fun.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Most sports fans might be tempted to give the Met a miss, but the museum actually has a lot more to offer than fine art. If you love baseball cards, it’s worth having a look at the Jefferson R. Burdick collection while you’re there, as it contains over 30,000 cards! You may even spot some relics from famous sports games.

Sports Bars

New York has no shortage of sports bars, so even if you’re only in the city for a day or two, you can still find the time to catch a sports game and have a drink. Some popular destinations include Taproom No. 307, Keg & Lantern, Stout, and Stan’s Sports Bar. If you’re travelling with friends, you can all head down one evening and maybe even make friends with some locals while you’re there.

Bergino Baseball Clubhouse

If the Met just isn’t doing it for you in terms of sports memorabilia, you might have better luck at the Bergino Baseball Clubhouse. Here you’ll find some incredible souvenirs dedicated to baseball while also being able to enjoy sports-related exhibitions.

Aqueduct Racetrack

There’s nothing quite like placing a bet on a horse race and one of the best places to do this is at the Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens. If you’re in New York between October and May, then chances are you’ll be able to spend a day at the races and cheer on your chosen horse. One of the best, most atmospheric races is undoubtedly the Belmont Stakes, which is usually held in June, so keep an eye out and try your luck.
