USK Prague dance to title game and UMMC back in familiar surroundings

USK Prague will continue their magical season after they surprisingly coasted past Fenerbahce 62-49 in the Euroleague Women Final Four to reach the championship game in the Czech capital.

The Final Four hosts had built a three-point lead heading into the final quarter then blitzed the Turkish side in the fourth, holding them to just 7 points.

Prague’s Kia Vaughn started slowly but as the game progressed, so did her rhythm and consistency – and by the final buzzer – she had notched a well-earned double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds.

For Fenerbahce, they miss out on a third straight trip to the title game as Tina Charles led the way for the Turkish side with 14 points.

Despite missing star player Diana Taurasi, UMMC Ekaterinburg have returned to the big dance as they beat Dynamo Kursk 81-70 in the all-Russian semi-final and the reward for UMMC’s win is a date with the hosts Prague in the final.

And the Russian giants will no doubt start as favourites, especially after they brushed aside their counterparts quickly and efficiently, building an 11-2 lead early and never looking in any real trouble.

Sandrine Gruda was a rebound away from a double-double but in the end settled for 20 points and 9 boards to lead Ekaterinburg’s attack. Candace Parker netted 15 points and pulled down 15 boards to boot.

Isil Alben led Kursk with 16 points as their proud offensive game was torn to shreds by UMMC. Dynamo shot a woeful 27.3 percent from the floor as a result.
