Suns to insert Patrick Mutombo in coaching staff

The Phoenix Suns are adding Patrick Mutombo to Monty Williams’ coaching staff (hat tip to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski).

Mutombo, 42, previously served in G League’s Raptors 905 as a head coach. He holds an eight years of experience being an assistant in the NBA, most notably with the Toronto Raptors wherein he won his first championship in 2019 against the Golden State Warriors.

The Congolese-Belgian national also played professionally in several countries before starting his coaching career in 2011.

Mutombo has guided the 905 to two consecutive first place finishes, including a trip to the Conference Finals this season.

The Suns have recently lost assistant Luke Loucks upon joining Mike Brown’s staff in the Sacramento Kings.

After compiling a franchise-high 64-18 regular season record and the highest seed amongst all the teams in the league, Phoenix crumbled in their second-round series against the Dallas Mavericks.
