WNBA All-Star and two-time Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner, 31, was arrested at Moscow airport on February 18 for allegedly bringing vape cartridges containing hash oil – which is illegal in Russia – into the country.
Russia is looking to exchange Brittney Griner in a prisoner swap for arms dealer Viktor Bout, several state-owned Russian news outlets reported on Friday, citing unnamed government sources.
“Currently, talks are underway on exchanging Bout for Griner,” the source said.
Viktor Bout, also known as ‘the Merchant of Death,’ was sentenced in the U.S. to 25 years in prison for organizing the arms trade and links to international terrorism. Hollywood made a movie about his exploits, Lord of War, starring Nicholas Cage.
