Steve Kerr on injured Gary Payton II: ‘He’s crushed’

Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors have collective sentiments about Gary Payton II’s injury and lengthy timetable.

They are all devastated.

For a Warriors team that aspires to have a complete unit en route to the reclamation of the basketball crown, the absence of Payton II is absolutely a gut-wrenching one. His blue-collar, defense-first approach will be sorely missed – as the guard is set to miss three to five weeks due to a fractured left elbow.

“He’s got a huge brace on his arm,” Kerr on Payton II, via ClutchPoints’ Mark Haynes. “He’s going to be out for a long time, and he’s crushed…In the spotlight, playing in the playoffs, playing a huge role, and playing well. That’s all been taken away from him. We all feel terrible for Gary.”

Payton II has been a huge revelation in Golden State’s rebirth this season. Hopping from different teams since 2016 as an undrafted cager, the 29-year-old found a new home in Bay Area wherein he made his pro career a notable one for being a serviceable, defensive-specialist role player.

Now that he is officially out for the remainder of the West Semis, the Dubs have to do a favor – will their way through the NBA Finals in order for Payton II to play again and cherish the moments of his emergence.
