Isiah Thomas was born in Detroit, Michigan, on September 16, 1956. He played basketball at the University of Michigan from 1974 to 1978. After graduating, he joined the NBA where he became a star point guard. In his career, he won two championships (with the Los Angeles Lakers) and three Most Valuable Player awards. Also a favourite in many NBA spreads across the globe.
Thomas started playing basketball at age five. At the time, his father was a coach at St. Joseph High School. His mother worked as a secretary at Wayne State University.
He was drafted by the Indiana Pacers in 1979. He also played for the New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Washington Bullets, Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets, Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics, Atlanta Hawks, Toronto Raptors, and Denver Nuggets.
In 1989, Thomas signed with the Seattle SuperSonics. However, he did not play much during that season because of an injury. The following year, he returned to the team and helped them win their first championship.
He retired after the 1992-1993 season. He is currently working as a commentator for TNT’s coverage of the NBA playoffs.

His dad, William Thomas, was a physical education teacher who taught at St. Joseph’s Catholic school in Hamtramck. His mom, Mary, was a social studies teacher who taught at the same school.
His family moved to Southfield when he was six years old. There, he attended Southfield Central High School. He graduated from high school in 1975.
After graduation, he enrolled at the University of Michigan. During his freshman year, he averaged 9 points per game. As a sophomore, he averaged 15 points per contest.
As a junior, Thomas led the Wolverines to the NCAA tournament. That year, he scored 19.5 points per game.
As a senior, he led the team to another NCAA appearance. This time, he scored 18.6 points per game.
After College
Thomas finished his collegiate career as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,066 points. He also holds the record for most assists in a single season.
He was selected in the second round of the 1979 NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers. That year, he had 14.8 points per game.
However, he only appeared in four games for the Pacers before being traded to the New York Knicks. He spent the next three seasons with the Knicks.
During this period, he averaged 17.4 points per game. However, he never made it past the second round of the playoffs.
In 1982, Thomas was traded again. This time, he went to the San Antonio Spurs. He remained there until 1984.
During his tenure with the Spurs, he averaged 12.7 points per game. He also led the league in steals during the 1983-1984 season.
That year, he won the NBA Most Valuable Player award.
NBA Career
In 1985, he joined the Chicago Bulls. He would spend two more seasons with the team.
During those two years set the franchise record for most steals in a single season. In 1983, he swiped 5.9 steals per game.
That year, he also won the leagues Most Improved Player award.
In 1985, Thomas was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. He played with the team until 1988.
During his stint with the Lakers, he averaged 11.3 points per game. He was named to the All-Star Game twice.
In 1987, he was traded to the Washington Bullets. He stayed there until 1990.
During that time, he averaged 10.2 points per game. He won an Olympic gold medal in 2000.
In 1991, he signed with the Charlotte Hornets. The following year, he retired from playing professionally.
Thomas is currently working as a color commentator on TNT. He also serves as a consultant and coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
