Rumors: Lakers to possibly engage with Raptors’ Nick Nurse for team’s head coaching helm

With Frank Vogel’s days on the sidelines now being numbered, there is a possibility that the Los Angeles Lakers will try to engage with an unlikely candidate for their top coaching helm following this lowly season.

An Eastern Conference executive told Sean Heveny of Heavy.com that the Lakers could offer the position to Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse.

The affiliation of Nurse’s agent, Andy Miller, to the Klutch Sports might serve as a stepping stone for Los Angeles to try to lure away the talented strategist from Canada. The said agency is notable for having two of the biggest clients in basketball, which also happened to be the superstar duo of the West coast franchise in LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

“I would expect the Lakers to at least ask about Nick Nurse,” the executive said. “He’s one of the best fairly young coaches in the league … I would not be surprised to see the Lakers ask about him but more as a favor to Klutch. Maybe they won’t because he is so far out of reach.”

Nurse, who signed a contract extension worth around $8 million per year last 2020, currently has the keys of the Raptors coaching and is continuing to share exact aspirations with lead executive Masai Ujiri for the ball club. As such, he is truly an improbable name to consider for the Lakers’ lead strategic slate if compared to those that were rumored initially like Quin Snyder, Mike Brown, Steve Clifford and Doc Rivers.

There is a thinkable chance that L. A. will inquire, but the persuasion is highly unlikely to succeed. Knowing that Nurse has been one of the most respected minds in the league and was the mastermind of their 2019 maiden title, the promising Toronto being bannered by Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet won’t let him walk off as easily as that.
