Hosts Brazil might have to qualify for Rio 2016

The Brazilian national teams have learned that they will not be granted an automatic spot in the Rio Olympics next year as hosts.

For the time being, Brazil will compete at this summer’s FIBA Americas championship in Monterrey and the Americas for Women event in Edmonton in order to book a ticket for the Olympic Games.

FIBA will decide later this year if Brazil will go to Rio, but for the moment, Ruben Magnano’s side have not secured their place. For now, the USA are the only team to advance to the Olympics via the World Cup and world championship for women.

Brazil are currently ranked 9th in the FIBA world ranking for men and 7th for women.
