Last eight line-up confirmed after six sweeps, Eurocup Eighthfinals round up

The Eurocup Quarterfinals matchups are Unics Kazan vs Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar; Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas vs Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir, Banvit Bandirma vs Paris Levallois and Khimki Moscow Region vs Valencia Basket. Six of those teams won by sweeping their respective series, including the reigning champ Valencia, which set a record along the way. Only Banvit lost Game 2, but advanced.

Unics Kazan – Fox Town Cantu

2014 Eurocup runner-up Unics Kazan recorded a 75-72 victory over FoxTown Cantu to win their two-game series with an aggregate score of 145-136. The home team used a 17-2 run late in the second quarter to get a double digit margin, but Cantu answered with a 2-11 march bridging the last two quarter to tie the game at 58-58. In the end, 7 points by Keith Langford made the difference in a close finish. Kostas Kaimakoglou led four scorers in double figures for the winners with 14 points; he also added 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

Virtus Rome – Banvit Bandirma

The only series in which the Game 2 winner did not advance was this one.  Banvit Bandirma lost 66-56 at Virtus Rome, but advanced thanks to its 16-point victory from Game 1. Banvit won the series 127-121 and progressed to the Eurocup Quarterfinals for the first time. In Game 2, Rome had a 31-29 halftime lead and then took control behind Rok Stipcevic, who scored 12 third quarter points for 50-36 lead. But Sammy Mejia scored 11 points the rest of the way for Banvit, including a pair of triples in the last five minutes of the contest to help Banvit hold on. Stipcevic led Rome with 23 points and 6 assists. Mejia netted 21 and grabbed 9 rebounds for Banvit.

PGE Turow Zgorzelec – Paris Levallois

The visitors made history! Paris Levallois downed PGE Turow Zgorzelec 78-87 in Poland to reach the Eurocup Quarterfinals for the first time in club history. Paris swept the series thanks to Blake Schilb, who paced the winners with 24 points and 5 assists. Mike Green added 21 points and 6 assists while Dionte Christmas had 15 points for Paris. Turow led 22-16 late in the first quarter, but Schilb scored 8 points in a series-changing 0-18 run that gave Paris a 22-34 margin. Schilb and Christmas kept the guests in charge at 34-44 at halftime. Turow improved its defense after the break and a three-pointer by Kulig brought the hosts within 44-46, but Schilb and Sharrod Ford stepped up for Paris, which boosted its margin to 57-69 soon after that and relied on Schilb and Green to keep their team ahead until the final buzzer. Vlad Moldoveanu led Turow with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas – Cedevita Zagreb

Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas downed Cedevita Zagreb 75-72 at home to return to the Eurocup quarterfinals for the first time since 2011. Gran Canaria swept the two-game series and will face Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir in the quarters. Kyle Kuric led the winners with 20 points and Brad Newley added 15. Cedevita led 67-68 in the fourth quarter, but Tomas Bellas led an 8-0 run which kept Gran Canaria out of trouble in crunch time. Stanko Barac led Cedevita with 13 points. Gran Canaria had recorded a 76-84 victory in Zagreb in Game 1.

Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir – Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius

There will be a first-time Eurocup Quarterfinalist from Turkey after Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir ousted Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius 97-81 at home. The series was tied after Game 1, turning the Game 2 showdown into a make-or-break battle. Jon Diebler led the winners with 26 points and Bobby Dixon added 14. A 9-0 run which Kenny Gabriel capped with a three-pointer gave Karsiyaka an 18-11 lead. Karsiyaka boosted its margin to 38-24 midway through the second quarter and found a go-to guy in Diebler, who had 15 points in four minutes to give the hosts a 53-34 lead at halftime. Nothing changed after the break, as Karsiyaka boosted its margin to 65-42 and coasted the rest of the way.

FC Bayern Munich – Valencia Basket

Reigning Eurocup champion Valencia Basket crushed FC Bayern Munich 60-94 on the road in Game 2 of their two-game series to cruise into the quarterfinals. Valencia set a record for the largest road win in a Eurocup series. It swept the series by aggregate score of 174-118 and next will face Khimki Moscow Region. Valencia opened a double-digit margin in the opening five minutes, and never looked back, hitting 12 of 24 triples as four players scored in double figures – Bojan Dubljevic amassed 16 points and 10 rebounds in only 22 minutes, Pablo Aguilar scored 14, Pau Ribas netted 13 points, and Nemanja Nedovic 11 points in victory. Anton Gavel had 14 points for the hosts.

Khimki Moscow Region – Zenit St. Petersburg

Petteri Koponen made 6 of 8 three-pointers and totaled 24 points as Khimki Moscow Region beat Zenit St. Petersburg 89-70 to sweep their series. Khimki advanced to the quarterfinals for the third time and the first time in three years. The result marked Khimki’s fourth victory in six games against Zenit this season. Khimki won Game 1 by 2 points the week before. A 16-0 run in the first quarter not only gave Khimki the lead for good, but Zenit never got closer than 10 after that. It was 46-33 at halftime and the lead peaked at 26 in the fourth quarter as Khimki celebrated a spot in the quarterfinals. The win also stretched Khimki’s home-court Eurocup winning streak to 17 games.

Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar -Brose Baskets Bamberg

Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar -Brose Baskets Bamberg In the lone game on Tuesday, the 2013 champion Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar routed Brose Baskets Bamberg 70-53, thus winning their two-game total-points eighthfinals series by 19 and clinching a spot in the quarterfinals. Derrick Brown scored 22 points and dished 5 assists to lead Lokomotiv, which used an 18-2 first-quarter run to take charge. After leading 40-27 at halftime, the hosts reeled off 10 unanswered points to start the third quarter and cruised the rest of the way. Alexey Zhukanenko added 10 points for the winners, who took a 78-80 victory in Game 1 in Germany. The win also extends Lokomotiv’s record winning-streak to 19 games.
