Bosnia and Herzegovina superstar Mirza Teletovic said on Monday that he feels great, he’s gone back to the gym and is confident he will resume full basketball activity in approximately six months’ time.
The 29-year-old Brooklyn Nets forward started working out in mid-February and is allowed to run, lift weights and even shoot the ball but is on a medical restriction to stay out of contact drills until at least July, as he received treatment consisting of blood thinners.
Teletovic was diagnosed with blood clots in his lungs on 22 January after experiencing intense breath shortness and rushed to a Los Angeles hospital during the Nets’ game against the Clippers.
On Monday, the Bosnian star told reporters in New York that he was having trouble breathing since early January but was unable to identify the reason.
“I couldn’t run, I would go up and down twice and had to get my breath together,” Teletovic said.
“My family, everybody realised I would just lie down and sleep because I was tired all the time.
“I could not get it together.”
Brooklyn head coach Lionel Hollins said at the time that Nets physical trainer Tim Walsh might have saved the Mostar-born forward’s life by insisting the hospital would perform a CT scan on Teletovic before allowing him to board a plane back to New York.
“It’s definitely serious if you have a blood clot,” Teletovic said.
“But I felt relief because I knew what was wrong with me.
“Especially when doctors told me it was treatable.
“It happens every day, we have medications for it, you should be OK.”
The doctors have pointed to frequent air travel and limited rest time as probable reasons for the clots’ development.
Teletovic has been the linchpin of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team since becoming a senior international in 2004 and propelled the Balkan side into EuroBasket 2015 with superb displays in last summer’s Qualification Round.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina Basketball Federation (KSBiH) however have stated that their primary concern is for the star forward to make a full recovery, while the question of his participation in September’s big tournament will be addressed later.
Bosnia and Herzegovina were drawn in Group A at EuroBasket 2015, together with Poland, Israel, Finland, Russia and hosts France.
