Report: WNBA’s Aces, Liberty eyeing Spurs’ Becky Hammon for coaching gig

The Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty of the WNBA are in heavy consideration of signing San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon.

Per Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, Hammon and both of the respective teams are showing mutual intentions for a possible partnership.

The Liberty’s top coaching helm is open after Walt Hopkins departed earlier this month. Meanwhile, the Aces are currently being led by Detroit Pistons legend Bill Laimbeer, who will reportedly settle in another position within the franchise if Hammon decides to join the club.

Hammon, 44, played in the WNBA for 16 seasons, who became a key component of Liberty and San Antonio Stars. She has six WNBA All-star jerseys under her belt to go along with four all-WNBA Team selections. In 2014, she was hired by the Spurs as an assistant under Gregg Popovich — making tons of history in the NBA and United States’ four major professional sports as a female strategist.

Last offseason, she drew interest from the Orlando Magic and Portland Trail Blazers. She turned out to be a finalist amongst coaching candidates in the Rip City, until the management picked Chauncey Billups as the new head coach of the Damian Lillard-led ball club.

Las Vegas finished the 2020-2021 season with a 24-8 record as the first place team of the West, before succumbing from the hands of Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury in the postseason. Meanwhile, the eight-seeded 12-20 New York was earlier ousted by the Mercury in the first round.
