NBA Lineup Notes: Grizzlies without Morant

Quick notes on the Memphis Grizzlies since Ja Morant’s injury.

  • Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant went down on November 26th in the 1st quarter vs. the Atlanta Hawks. The club lost that game by 32 points and knew they had a tough road ahead without their star.
  • However, Memphis’ starters along with Tyus Jones have made up for Morant’s absence in a big way by winning 3 straight games since his knee injury.
  • Jaren Jackson Jr. has been lights out during the streak, averaging 23.0 PPG/6.0 RPG/3.0 BPG. He’s currently 5th in the NBA in BPG at 2.1 per game.
  • The super competitive Dillon Brooks & Desmond Bane are also playing productive basketball for the Grizzlies. During their last three games, Brooks is putting up 16.3 PPG & 2.7 SPG and Bane has shot 50.0% from three and dished out 2.5 APG.
  • As for Jones & Steven Adams, they’ve been solid on both ends during the winning streak. Jones’ passing (7.7 APG) and defense (1.7 SPG) have filled in nicely at point guard, while Adams’ rebounding (9.3 RPG), decision making (2.7 APG), and rim protection (1.3 BPG) are getting it done down low.
  • And we can’t forget about Memphis’ bench, who took it to the Oklahoma City Thunder in their NBA record setting 73 point blowout on Thursday. The Grizzlies bench had 93 points with six of their seven reserves scoring in double figures, as De’Anthony Melton (19 points), Santi Aldama (18 points), John Konchar (17 points), Brandon Clarke (11 points), Xavier Tillman (11 points), Jarrett Culver (11 points), and Killian Tillie (6 points) all played great.
  • Not to mention, guys like Kyle Anderson (7.9 PPG) & Ziaire Williams (5.0 PPG) were out for Memphis and possibly could have added even more points.
  • Despite Morant going down, Memphis’ starters are stepping up and even though most of their role players started off 2021-22 seeing less minutes, the bench remains ready, proving why this club was a playoff team last year.
  • Team basketball has resulted in wins, let’s see if the Memphis Grizzlies can keep winning without Ja Morant.
