Basketball Bundesliga: Bayern Munich climbs to the top of the standings after win; ALBA returns to winning ways vs. Bamberg

Bayern Munich was able to climb to the top of the standings Sunday night after prevailing in the Franconian-Bavarian derby over medi Bayreuth with an 87-78 win.

The Bavarians used a third-quarter 27-16 run to set their foundation for the win. Five Bayern players scored double-digit points, with Augustine Rubit being the top scorer with 17 points.

The German Cup holders improved their record to 4-1, being at the top of the standings alongside Göttingen (4-1). After the loss to Bayern in the EuroLeague, ALBA Berlin returned to its winning path.

ALBA dropped Brose Bamberg from the top of the easyCredit BBL, as the reigning champions beat Bamberg 101-89, despite Chris Sengfelder’s brilliant performance (29 points).

The “albatrosses” were convincing as a collective group with six of the ten players scoring double-digit points. Johannes Thiemann registered ten of his 13 points in the final quarter to help ALBA to the win and move to 3-3.

Telekom Baskets Bonn remained perfect at home on the season as they battled past Niners Chemnitz 76-67. Parker Jackson-Cartwright was his usual brilliant play with 20 points, while Karsten Tadda knocked down two big three-pointers in crunch time as Bonn moved to 4-2.

Hakro Merlins Crailsheim fought back from a double-digit deficit and prevailed in an overtime thriller, winning 92-90 at home over Basketball Löwen Braunschweig. TJ Shorts scored all 19 of his points after halftime, including the game winner with 26 seconds remaining, as Crailsheim improved to 3-3.

The Fraport Skyliners had their best performance of the season in the away game vs Ulm — and finally registered their first victory (88-80) away from home. Brancou Badio set a new career-high with 25 points for the winning side.

MHP Riesen withstood the brilliant game of Jamel Morris (33 points) to get an 88-80 win over Syntainics MBC. Tremmell Darden had an impressive all-around performance for the winning side with 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

In the game that opened Round 6 of easycredit BBL, the Hamburg Towers claimed their fourth consecutive win as they prevailed over MLP Academics Heidelberg with 81-75. Both teams have the same record (4-2) after the end of Round 6.

After two defeats in a row, s.Oliver Würzburg is back on the road to success against the JobStairs GIESSEN 46ers. Lower Franconia club secured their 82-69 home win with a 17-2 run in the second half.

The BG Göttingen expanded its winning streak to four victories, inflicting the fourth consecutive defeat on the EWE Baskets Oldenburg with a 95-85 home win. Jake Toolson led the winning side with 24 points and seven threes as Roel Moors’ team remain at the top of the standings.
