Carmelo Anthony reacts to scoring team-high 28 points, passing Moses Malone

The new-look Los Angeles Lakers were finally able to win their first game this season after narrowly defeating the Memphis Grizzlies (121-118). Carmelo Anthony was the top performer for the winners with a team-high 28 points.

The 37-year-old forward came off the bench and played 28 minutes as he made 10/15 two-pointers and 6/8 three-pointers. In this game, Anthony passed Moses Malone on the NBA All-Time points leaders list. The Lakers veteran has now scored 27,423 points during his career, passing Malone by 24 points.

After the game, Melo talked about what it felt finally winning a game and passing Malone. “We know it’s going to be tough especially early on in this part of the season,” he said. “We told each other before the game that we’re gonna have to take this one. We had to fight to get this one. Sometimes you got to go win games like this to try and find some or start some momentum.

“I thought we did a great job of just playing the game tonight. We had some lows in the game tonight but for the most part we did what we had to do to win a basketball game. That’s all I count.”

“It’s an honor, it’s a blessing. I’m still doing it 19 years in,” Anthony said when asked to share his thoughts about becoming 9th player on NBA all time points leaders list. “I’m still passionate about the game, passionate about my craft. My teammates they uplift me every single day. I’m just happy to be here, man. It’s third game so hopefully there’s many more to come.”

“The grind is worth it. The journey is worth it. I’m from where tomorrow’s on promise so I got to enjoy every moment. Again, I’m just happy we got the win tonight so that’s the most important.”
