LeBron James says he was offered contracts by two NFL teams

“I wanted to be a red-zone specialist, like Gronk.”

LeBron James has revealed being offered contracts by a pair of NFL teams during the 2011 NBA lockout. The Los Angeles Lakers star is coming off a huge summer on a personal front, having seen his movie, Space jam: A New Legacy, released. And he insists he had an opportunity to turn the sports world on its head several years ago.

Speaking to Peyton and Eli Manning on ESPN’s Monday Night Football, the four-time NBA champion claimed he was targeted by the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks.

“Jerry Jones offered me a contract, and actually Pete Carroll in Seattle did as well during our lockout time,” he said (H/T CBS Sports). “Definitely got my blood flowing again, got my mind racing again about the game of football, being out there on Sundays. We was able to get a deal done in the NBA and I was back on the court in no time, but I definitely thought about it. I still got the jerseys, too, that Jerry and Pete Carroll sent me from 2011.”

LeBron added he would have wanted to play tight end had he switched professions 10 years ago.

“I wanted to be a red-zone specialist, like Gronk,” he noted.

Of course, the versatile forward did what was best for his career and his decision was made a lot easier by the lockout coming to an end. He would go on to win two championships with the Miami Heat before heading back to Cleveland to win one with the Cavaliers. He has since won a fourth with the Lakers and is now gearing up for another push with a retooled squad in L.A.
