76ers confirm Ben Simmons trade request – Will they accept it, though?

The Philadelphia 76ers and president of basketball operations Daryl Morey officially confirmed that Ben Simmons has asked for a trade.

Even though Morey is still hopeful they will convince Simmons to stay with the team, the young guard has no intention to report to training camp.

The situation between the Sixers and Simmons remains complicated. With the team asking for a high price in order to trade Simmons, any deal seems unlikely at the moment.

“Things can change fast, but league sources don’t sense that a deal is anywhere close right now. The Sixers still hope Simmons will return to the team so they can experiment with his role, or increase his value and help create more trade possibilities,” Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer reports.

Morey also noted it has been a long time since he last spoke with Simmons, ‘six or seven weeks ago’. But, Philadelphia still has no plans to trade the young star.

“Offers for Simmons have thus far included draft picks or young players, not anything a contender like Philadelphia would want. And since nearly half the league is ineligible to be dealt until December 15, teams that might be willing to offer a veteran can’t do that yet,” O’Connor adds.

For his part, Simmons was the one that received the most blame for the Sixers’ early playoff elimination. Now, he is unwilling to speak with his teammates and change his mind and intends to join another NBA team.

Regarding his trade request, most offers include draft picks or young players. Instead, Philadelphia wants to receive a top star in return. As a result, there is no progress in trade talks.

Still, Philadelphia could suspend or fine Ben Simmons for every training camp day he misses. The young guard has four years and $147M left on his current contract.
