Boston Celtics will likely keep Marcus Smart for the next season, after Lonzo Ball, who was their top priority this offseason, signed with the Chicago Bulls.

According to Mark Murphy of the Boston Herald, Smart will remain in Boston, while the Celtics will only make roster additions that are considered “on the margins”.

Smart will become a free agent next season, being under contract through the upcoming 2021-22 campaign. He averaged 13.1 points, 5.7 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game during the 2021-22 campaign.

The 27-year-old guard is expected to seek a max extension (four years, $80 million) the next offseason, and according to Murphy, Smart still faces a tough negotiation with Boston targeting the 2022 free agency.
