Aron Baynes was ruled out for the rest of the Olympics after suffering a neck injury, Australia announced Friday. The injury occurred during the Boomers’ win over Italy in the preliminary round of the tournament on Wednesday.

Baynes is expected to recover in the coming weeks, but not in time to help Australia for the rest of the tournament. Australia, who has a 2-0 record in the Olympics, will face Germany Saturday in the third pool game of Group B.

“I am really disappointed that I can’t continue in the Olympics,” Baynes said. “I along with the rest of the team have been working so hard in our quest for an historic Olympic medal, and I am gutted that I can’t complete the journey with the boys’, but I have every confidence that they will get the job done”.

Baynes had 14 points and seven rebounds versus Italy, helping Team Australia secure an important victory. He had four points and five rebounds in the opening game against Nigeria.
