Wes Unseld Jr. the favorite to be Wizards’ next head coach

Denver Nuggets associate head coach Wes Unseld Jr. is emerging as the leader to be the Washington Wizards’ new head coach, according to Shams Charania and Fred Katz of The Athletic.

It was recently reported that the Wizards had focused their coaching search on Unseld Jr. and Milwaukee Bucks assistant Darvin Ham.

Unseld Jr. has been a highly-regarded assistant since he began his coaching career with the Wizards in 2005.

His father, Wes Unseld Sr., is one of the franchise’s best players, leading Washington to its only championship in 1978, and he is also the only player in franchise history to win the NBA MVP award.

Unseld Sr. also went on to be the head coach and an executive with the franchise.

Before Unseld Jr. became an assistant in 2005, he began as a scout in 1997 under his GM father.

Unseld Jr., who grew up in Maryland, was an assistant with the Wizards (2005-2011) before moving on to be an assistant with the Golden State Warriors (2011-12), Orlando Magic (2012-2015) and Nuggets (2015-present).

Now that the Wizards appear set to fill their head coaching vacancy left by Scott Brooks, the New Orleans Pelicans are the only team without a head coach in the NBA, but they are close to finalizing a deal that would make Phoenix Suns assistant Willie Green their next head coach.
