Becky Hammon on seeking head coaching opportunities: “Every race I have gotten into my entire life, I have been behind”

Becky Hammon addressed being shortlisted for the head coaching position of the Portland Trail Blazers this season.

Hammon said she knew she wasn’t the frontrunner for the job, as the Blazers preferred Chauncey Billups, who took over the team eventually. But, she mentioned she is fully aware of what she is facing in her quest to become head coach.

“I knew I was second; I knew who they wanted. And I am ok with that, because in every race I have gotten into my entire life, I have been behind.

That is just how it is, but at the same time, I am not ignorant to what I am going up against, Hammon said, via the Score.

Becky Hammon has been a lead assistant of Gregg Popovich in the San Antonio Spurs for several years. She has been linked to many head coaching positions, but has not yet become the first female head coach in NBA history.
