Nate McMillan: “When I was let go last year with Indiana, it was a shock”

When Nate McMillan was fired last year by Indiana, he was left surprised and wondered what was next. Although, the opportunity to possibly be a head coach again became very much alive when he took over the Atlanta Hawks in an interim role after Lloyd Pierce’s firing back in March.

Fast forward to present day, and Nate McMillan is now the permanent head coach in Atlanta following their run to the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals. During the soon-to-be 57-year-old’s official introductory press conference on Friday, he recalled the shocking moment of being let go by Indiana last season.

(Via Bally Sports Southeast):

“When I was let go last year with Indiana, it was a shock, to say the least. Immediately after that, I just said, ‘Look, I’m taking a year off and I need to get away.’ The reason for that is because I put everything I have into who I’m working for, my players, the organization. I got both feet in. When that happened, I needed to just take some time and think about if I wanted to continue to do this.”
