The Portland Trail Blazers are finalizing a deal with former Washington Wizards coach Scott Brooks to become Chauncey Billups’ top assistant, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

Brooks spent the last five seasons with the Wizards before parting ways with the team on June 16.

He led the Wizards to a 183-207 record with three playoff appearances, including reaching the Eastern Conference Semifinals in 2016-17.

Billups is a first-time head coach, so someone like Brooks will bring plenty of experience to the Trail Blazers staff.

This will be the first time that Brooks will be an assistant coach since the 2008-09 season with the Oklahoma City Thunder, his last season as an assistant before becoming a head coach.

The 55-year-old will get the opportunity to continue to coach star guards, this time in Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum after coaching Russell Westbrook (twice), Bradley Beal, James Harden and John Wall.

The Trail Blazers will likely fill their coaching staff in the coming days and weeks.
