Uganda, Cape Verde clinch last two spots in AfroBasket 2021

The 16-team field for the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 is now officially set after Uganda defeated Morocco 77-65 in the final qualifying game.

Arthur Kaluma, a 19-year-old incoming freshman at Creighton University, made his national team debut for Uganda and was the game’s leading scorer with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field.

Ishmail Wainright also recorded a double-double for Uganda with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Uganda (second place in Group E) and Cape Verde (third place in Group E) have filled the last two spots in the AfroBasket field.

This will be Uganda’s third AfroBasket appearance, while it will be Cape Verde’s seventh appearance and their first since 2015.

Morocco needed a win against Uganda to have a chance to qualify, but they were eliminated with the loss today.

The four complete groups for the AfroBasket 2021 in Kigali, Rwanda are as follows:

  • Cape Verde

Group B

  • Tunisia
  • Central African Republic
  • Egypt
  • Guinea

Group C

  • Nigeria
  • Cote d’Ivoire
  • Kenya
  • Mali

Group D

  • Senegal
  • Cameroon
  • South Sudan
  • Uganda

The Group Phase of AfroBasket 2021 will take place from Aug. 24-29 with the top team from each group automatically advancing to the Quarter-Finals.

The eight teams that finish second and third place in Groups A, B, C and D will compete from Aug. 30-31 for the remaining four spots in the Quarter-Finals.

The Third-Place Game and the Final will be played on Sept. 5.
