Mavericks officially hiring Jason Kidd as head coach

The Dallas Mavericks have officially agreed to terms with Jason Kidd to be their next head coach, according to multiple reports.

Longtime Nike executive Nico Harrison has also been hired to lead basketball operations.

Rick Carlisle, who stepped down as head coach of the Mavericks and eventually took the Indiana Pacers‘ head coaching job, endorsed Kidd for the job.

“It’s hard to put an exact finger on it. It’s just a feeling that I had that it would be mutually beneficial,” said Carlisle. “My hope is that Jason Kidd will be the next coach of the Mavs because he and Luka have so many things in common as players.”

Carlisle continued, “I just think that it would be a great situation for Luka, and I think it would be an amazing situation for Jason. I’m the only person on the planet that’s coached both of those guys and that knows about all of their special qualities as basketball players. To me, that just would be a great marriage, but that’s just an opinion.”

Kidd previously coached the Brooklyn Nets for one season (2013-2014) and the Milwaukee Bucks for four seasons (2014-2018), accumulating a record of 183-190 in his five seasons as a head coach.

The 48-year-old had three playoff appearances in his time as a head coach and got one playoff series win with the Nets.

Kidd has been an assistant on Frank Vogel’s staff with the Los Angeles Lakers for the last two seasons and won a championship in 2020.

He is very familiar with the Mavericks franchise and has many fans within the organization, as he spent eight seasons as a player with the team from 1994-1997 and again from 2007-2012.
