Chauncey Billups “likely” to be named head coach of Trail Blazers

Current Los Angeles Clippers assistant Chauncey Billups is the likely choice to eventually become the next head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, according to John Hollinger of The Athletic.

Per Hollinger:

“Yes, league sources think Billups — currently a Clipper assistant — is the likely choice, which may be why Lakers assistant Jason Kidd removed himself from consideration with lightning speed.”

The Trail Blazers have the NBA’s longest active playoff streak, but they parted ways with Terry Stotts after the team was knocked out in the first-round for the fourth time in the last five years.

Los Angeles Lakers assistant Jason Kidd removed his name from consideration on June 6, saying that the Trail Blazers “will have great candidates for its head coaching job, but I’ve decided not to be one of them.”

Whoever general manager Neil Olshey chooses, the new head coach “comes with a clock ticking in the background” due to the uncertain situation regarding Damian Lillard, Hollinger notes, as teams around the league are gauging potential trade interest this offseason.

Lillard recently gave his approval of Billups as a candidate.

Billups, 44, is in his first season as an assistant on Tyronn Lue’s staff after spending time as a TV broadcaster and studio analyst for ESPN.
