Kuban and Gran Canaria remain unbeaten, Eurocup Last 32 round up

The Last 32 opened up with a host of impressive results. All told seven teams won on the road, including both Group H games. Both teams that were undefeated during the regular season – Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar and Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas – picked up lopsided road wins.

Telenet Ostend recorded its best European result in more than a decade, while Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir set a club record in points scored and tied a Last 32 record with 18 three-pointers made in its impressive victory.

GROUP G

Strasbourg downed last season’s Eurocup finalist Unics Kazan 72-61 at home. Strasbourg started the Last 32 with a win, denying Unics a happy return to the competition it won back in 2011. Matt Howard paced the winners with 15 points and 8 rebounds and Tadija Dragicevic added 14 points for Strasbourg. Zenit St. Petersburg bested CEZ Basketball Nymburk 72-84 on the road. Zenit used a 10-1 run in the third quarter to build a lead they were able to keep till the end. Walter Hodge led the winners with 18 points and 7 assists and Artem Vikhrov added 15 and 7.

GROUP H

Chuck Davis was unstoppable in the paint as Banvit Bandirma defeated Buducnost VOLI Podgorica 68-74. Davis amassed a career-high 28 points on 11-of-12 two-point shooting. Vladimir Dragicevic added 15 points and 10 rebounds for Banvit against his former team. Banvit led by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter before some technical fouls aided in a late Buducnost comeback. However Davis ensured the win for the visitors. Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas took care of Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari 76-91 to remain perfect this season. The hosts had no answer for Walter Tavares and his 26 points and 12 rebounds. Brad Newley added 23 points for the victors.

GROUP I

Fran Pilepic hit from downtown with 1.5 seconds left to finish Cedevita Zagreb’s thrilling 83-80 victory over CAI Zaragoza. Pilepic led the winners with 23 points on 5-of-7 shooting from long distance and a perfect 4 of 4 on two-pointers and Miro Bilan added 12 points. Stevan Jelovac had a great night in defeat with 28 points and 9 rebounds. Virtus Rome scored an impressive 82-66 home victory over Krasny Oktyabr Volgograd. Kyle Gibson led the way for Rome with 19 points while Bobby Jones scored 18. Krasny Oktyabr was paced by Romeo Travis’s 23 points and 7 rebounds.

GROUP J

A 10-0 fourth-quarter run made the difference as Limoges CSP beat PAOK Thessaloniki 71-59. J.P. Batista paced the hosts with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Adrien Moerman had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Thanks to those two players, the French champs clearly won the rebounding battle 40-23. FoxTown Cantu bested Khimki Moscow Region 99-88. Damain Hollis scored 19 points and Darius Johnson-Odom had 18 points and 7 assists as six Cantu players scored in double figures. Khimki was led by Tyrese Rice’s 25 points.

GROUP K

Brose Baskets Bamberg edged Union Olimpija Ljubljana 65-71 in the Slovenian capital. Ryan Thompson paced the winners with 15 points and Trevor Mbakwe posted 10 points and 12 rebounds for Bamberg. Halil Kanacevic led Olimpija with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Bamberg led all the way after opening the game with a 2-13 run. FC Bayern Munich defeated JDA Dijon 93-84 at home. Bo McCalebb paced the winners with 16 points. Bayern erased an early deficit to lead 54-45 at halftime and Bryce Taylor had 6 points in crunch time, allowing Bayern to get an important win.

GROUP L

History was made by the visitors as Telenet Ostend overwhelmed Baloncesto Seville 63-94 on the road. Pierre Antoine Gillet paced the winners with 15 points as Ostend cruised. It was Ostend’s biggest win in European competitions in over a decade – since it beat BBC Etzella of Luxembourg 105-49 back in 1999. Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius led from tip to buzzer in defeating PGE Turow Zgorzelec 98-86 to begin the Last 32 in the best way. Ksistof Lavrinovic led the winners with 22 points and Martynas Gecevicius contributed with 16 points and 10 assists. Rytas dished 27 assists and scored 11 of its 22 three-pointers. Turow got 23 points from Michal Chylinski, while Mardy Collins flirted with a triple-double, amassing 20 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists.

GROUP M

Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir overwhelmed Besiktas Integral Forex Istanbul 77-105. Karsiyaka set a club record in points scored, tied a Last 32 record with 18 three-pointers made and came within 1 point of the Last 32 mark for visiting teams. It outscored Besiktas in every quarter and collected 27 assists compared to 11 by the home side. Bobby Dixon led the way with 24 points on 7-of-10 three-point shooting. Neptunas Klaipeda downed Paris-Levallois 82-73. A 24-9 run that bridged the last two quarters gave Neptunas complete control of the game after a great start by the visitors, who took a double-digit margin early in the game. Deividas Gailius bagged 15 points for the winners.

GROUP N

In the Last 32 opener on Tuesday, Valencia Basket routed SLUC Nancy 77-46. The hosts started the game with 13 unanswered points and put it away for good with a 16-0 third-quarter charge. Romain Sato scored 10 of his team-high 13 points in the first quarter for the winners, while Luke Harangody posted 10 points and 10 rebounds. On Wednesday, Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar trounced CSU Asesoft Ploiesti 59-85. Derrick Brown led the winners with 19 points on 9-of-10 shooting plus 9 rebounds as the visitors outrebounded the hosts 22-50. Malcolm Delaney added 14 points.
