Wizards’ Bradley Beal not yet thinking about future after playoff elimination

After the Washington Wizards were eliminated from playoff contention, star guard Bradley Beal knows that the rumors about his future have already begun.

In his postgame press conference, Beal said it was too soon to think or decide about his future as he enters the final year of his two-year contract extension that he signed back in 2019.

“I haven’t even … we’re not gonna think about that, or even talk about it, right now,” said Beal. “I haven’t thought about none of that, as of yet.”

Despite sounding non-committal at first, Beal went on to praise the team’s young players and his experience playing alongside Russell Westbrook.

Beal was also asked about dealing with outside noise regarding his future.

“Ultimately, I’m in control,” said Beal. “I think that’s my biggest thing. People are going to report whatever they want, but I know where my mind is and I know if it’s not coming from the horse’s mouth, then it’s going to be rumors. I expect them. S—, they’re starting now. So it doesn’t change anything. I guess it’s going to increase a lot more this year with me going into the last year of my deal, but for me, I’m just relaxing, resting my body and we’ll evaluate all that when summer comes.”

It’s clear that there will always be trade rumors surrounding Beal, as he is in the prime of his career on a Wizards team that needs some more pieces in order to compete with the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

The Wizards front office has to make some roster upgrades to help surround Beal and Westbrook.

Beal, 27, has spent his entire nine-year NBA career with the Wizards and has emerged as one of the league’s top scorers, finishing runner-up (31.3 points per game) to Stephen Curry (32.0 points per game) for this year’s scoring title.

In the first-round series against the Philadelphia 76ers, Beal averaged 30.0 points, 6.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game in five games.
