Real Madrid president on EuroLeague: “They saved European basketball”

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez compared the planned European football Super League to the EuroLeague competition in his recent interview.

“[In basketball] we live in that normality,” Perez said to the “El Larguero” show of Cadena Ser radio (hat tip to Eurohoops.net). “The ACB and the Euroleague, and nothing happens. The Euroleague was created with teams from Greece, Turkey, Russia … For example, Bayern Munich has a basketball team and it’s there.”

Bayern Munich and the rest of the top-tier Bundesliga teams rejected the idea of the European Super League. Since then, several teams, including various Premier League clubs, have also withdrawn their participation.

“So I say, what happens? Is football different or how is this? It is important, in basketball it happens and people don’t complain. EuroLeague saved [European] basketball,” Perez continued.

Real Madrid is among the 12 founding members of the football Super League which was greeted with massive criticism from the fans and the football authorities. As a result, the 12 clubs announced the cancellation of the SL competition.
