Thunder’s Lu Dort interested in playing for Canada at Olympic qualifiers

Oklahoma City Thunder wing Luguentz Dort has expressed interest in potentially playing for Team Canada this summer at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

“Team Canada, yeah I’m looking to try out and try and make the team for this summer and to compete for the Olympics,” Dort said after a 26-point performance against the Toronto Raptors on April 18.

Dort stated that he was “looking to try out,” but in reality, he would likely have a spot on Team Canada’s roster if he ultimately commits to the team.

The 22-year-old is currently playing the best basketball of his short NBA career, as he is averaging 32.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.7 steals per game, while shooting 51.5 percent from the field and 55.5 percent from three-point in his last three games.

Canada will host one of the four Olympic Qualifying Tournaments and is in Group A with Greece and China, while Group B consists of Czech Republic, Turkey and Uruguay.

Canada plays Greece on June 29 and China on June 30 and if they finish in the top two of their group, they will advance to the semifinals on July 3.

The final will be on July 4 and the winner of the qualifying tournament will then qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.
