Warriors signing Gary Payton II to 10-day contract

The Golden State Warriors are signing guard Gary Payton II to a 10-day contract, according to Shams Charania.

The Warriors went below the NBA’s required minimum of 14 players on standard contracts at the trade deadline and had to add another player to their roster by today.

Payton hasn’t played in the NBA this season, as he played for the Toronto Raptors’ G League affiliate Raptors 905 in the bubble earlier this season.

In 13 games in the G League bubble, he averaged 10.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.5 steals per game and was named the Defensive Player of the Year.

Payton will be available for the Warriors practice today and the game against the Washington Wizards on April 9, as he has already been taking COVID-19 tests in anticipation of the 10-day signing, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic.

The 28-year-old has played 61 career NBA games including 29 games (17 starts) for the Wizards last season.
