Lakers’ interest in Kyle Lowry is a ‘smokescreen’, says Brian Windhorst

Toronto Raptors' Kyle Lowry gestures to the bench during the first half of an NBA preseason basketball game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Monday, Oct. 12, 2015, in Toronto.

Most recently, the Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly emerged as one of the teams interested in acquiring Kyle Lowry via a trade. However, NBA insider Brian Windhorst does not believe there is substance to such reports. Instead, he thinks that the rumor was facilitated by Lowry’s current team the Toronto Raptors.

“Yesterday there were some rumors going around that the Los Angeles Lakers were interested in trading for Kyle Lowry as well. Frankly, I don’t believe that it’s true,” Windhorst said on ESPN’s First Take.

“I think that’s a smokescreen thrown up by Toronto because they’re trying to get better offers out of Miami and Philadelphia.

“I know this is a bit technical so I apologize but both the Lakers and the Clippers are hard-capped,” he went on to explain why the deal would not work for the reigning NBA champions. “They have a hard cap that they could not go over. So what that means is that they can’t trade $23 million or $24 million dollars in players and get back Kyle Lowry who makes $30 million.

They can’t take that extra money. They have to trade $30 million dollars in players to get back. And for the Lakers that would possibly mean trading three or four rotation players. It’s just not going to happen. It’s not a realistic trade function.”
