FC Barcelona reached an agreement in principle with head coach Xavi Pascual to extends his contract until the end of the 2016-17 season, the club announced Wednesday.

Pascual, age 42, was promoted to the head coach position in February 2008, replacing Dusko Ivanovic. In his six full seasons with the club, Pascual has led Barcelona to five Final Fours, and the Turkish Airlines Euroleague title in 2010.

Pascual became the first Spanish coach to lift the Euroleague trophy in more than three decades. He has also led Barcelona to four Spanish League championships and three Spanish Copa del Rey titles since 2008; he has won at least one domestic title in each of his six full seasons with the club.

Pascual was voted winner of the Euroleague Basketball Alexander Gomelskiy Coach of the Year Trophy for the 2009-10 season. Pascual will coach his 500th game with Barcelona this week in the Euroleague Regular Season Round 10 game against Panathinaikos and Ivanovic, the coach he replaced.
