Report: Hawks want Jaylen Brown but trade said to be unlikely unless Trae Young is involved

It could be a wild rush to deadline day.

The Atlanta Hawks are reported as having asked for Jaylen Brown to be included in a trade package for forward John Collins, but the Boston Celtics All-Star is unlikely to be moved unless Trae Young and DeAndre Hunter are involved in the deal.

The Hawks have won eight straight games since firing Lloyd Pierce and replacing him with Nate McMillan yet it appears Collins isn’t sure of still being on the roster past the trade deadline on March 25. According to The Athletic’s Jared Weiss, the Hawks would like to see Brown head their way in a potential deal. He also reports that’s very unlikely to happen given the rarity with trades involving players of Brown’s caliber.

“Though the Hawks’ demands for Collins have been similar to Orlando’s Gordon price tag, Atlanta’s initial response to Boston’s pursuit of the 23-year-old forward was to build a larger deal around Jaylen Brown, league sources tell The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner. Since the 24-year-old All-Star plays the most valuable position in the game and just started a below market four-year deal, that was not going anywhere unless Atlanta was looking to include Trae Young and DeAndre Hunter, their two main building blocks. Trades for young top picks with long-term control like this are exceedingly rare, especially once they have hit the All-Star threshold.”

Shams Charania had previously reported that Atlanta had eyes on Celtics point guard Marcus Smart.
