The Washington Wizards are keeping an eye on Cleveland Cavaliers center Andre Drummond as a possible buyout target, according to Fred Katz and David Aldridge of The Athletic.
Drummond would likely prefer to play for a contending team, but the Wizards might be able to use their $4.2 million disabled player exception to offer more than a veteran’s minimum contract.
The 27-year-old is one of the most coveted players and is drawing interest from several teams around the NBA.
While Bradley Beal remains unlikely to be traded at the March 25 deadline, the Wizards are more likely to listen to offers for some of their younger players including Troy Brown Jr., Moritz Wagner, Jerome Robinson and Isaac Bonga.
All four players, who are between the ages of 21 and 24, have been in and out of the team’s rotation this season.
Of the four, Brown has the most appeal and trade value.
“[There is] not a robust market for any of those guys … Brown may have a little market as a young, developing player,” according to an unnamed opposing general manager.
One executive also told Katz and Aldridge that the Wizards could probably get a “second-round-equivalent asset” for Brown, who was the 15th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.
“My guess is an early second(-rounder) and/or a decent young player,” another executive said. “I’m sure they’d like more, but not sure those guys have much more value than that at this point.”
