Several Pelicans’ players were eligible to receive the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. According to Andrew Lopez of ESPN, the Pelicans received their vaccines in consultation with team doctors and officials, the team announced.
The Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards announced the expansion of eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine, allowing everyone 16 years or older to receive the shot, if they have an underlying health condition.
“The Pelicans support the state’s vital efforts to encourage everyone to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, as large-scale vaccination of our community is the best way to keep everyone safe and to end the COVID-19 pandemic,” the team said in a statement Sunday.
Forward Nicolo Melli and guard Sindarius Thornwell are among the players that publicly acknowledge they received the vaccine.
One of the 12 underlying conditions is being overweight, which defined as someone having a body mass index of over 25. Many NBA players are under this category despite being professional athletes.
