Kawhi Leonard intends to join Team USA in the Tokyo Olympics

Los Angeles Clippers superstar Kawhi Leonard said he would join Team USA for the 2021 Olympics if he makes the cut prior to the NBA All-Star Game.

(via NBC Sports):

“A lot of people were in for 2020, but just the pandemic pretty much killed everything,” Leonard said. “Right now, my plan is to go.”

In that case, Leonard will reunite with Gregg Popovich, the U.S. Olympic head coach and the coach of the San Antonio Spurs.

Leonard spent the first seven seasons of his NBA career with the Spurs before joining the Toronto Raptors and then the Los Angeles Clippers.

As several NBA superstars have yet to make a verbal commitment for playing for Team USA the upcoming summer, Leonard is one of the first upper-echelon superstar to express the willingness to play.

“It doesn’t really matter how much success that we have,” said Leonard on the possibility for Clippers to go deep in the postseason. “If I feel up to it, if I feel ready to go around that time, then I’m going to play.”

Given the situation, the NBA postseason could end one day (July 22) before the Olympic Games’ opening ceremony, if the Finals end up going to a Game 7.
