George Karl to Dr. J: “Dean Smith never complimented a guy more than he complimented you”

In 1971, Julius Erving’s UMass Minutemen went up against George Karl & UNC in the NIT Tournament at Madison Square Garden. North Carolina ended up winning the title, but coach Dean Smith first had to find a way to stop Dr. J. Karl talked to Erving about the game on his podcast last month, revealing to Julius that Smith admired his basketball brilliance.

(Via Truth and Basketball with George Karl):

“I just want you to know Dean Smith never complimented a guy more than he complimented you when he gave us the scouting report on Massachusetts. I thought we were playing against God to be honest with you.”
