Rockets likely to release DeMarcus Cousins later this week, per report

DeMarcus Cousins is expected to become a free agent later this week, according to Randy McIlvoy, sports director of local KPRC.

As McIlvoy states, a trade appears to not be a feasible solution so far for the Houston Rockets. Cousins signed a non-guaranteed contract the past offseason.

As the Rockets seem to be in the midst of re-tooling their roster, after the James Harden blockbuster trade, the franchise would prefer to offer Cousins’ minutes to a younger player.

Last week, the Rockets opted to fully guarantee Cousins’ contract for the 2020-21 season. Cousins missed most of the last two seasons with a series of severe leg injuries, and that’s the cause he opted to sign a non-guaranteed deal.

Cousins is averaging 9.6 points and 7.6 rebounds in 20.2 minutes through 25 games during the 2020/21 season campaign. He only missed three of his team’s 28 games showing the much-needed durability after two years.
