New Orleans Pelicans fell to the Portland Trail Blazers in a close-fought contest Wednesday. Lonzo Ball had the chance to win it for his team, after Damian Lillard hit a layup and free throw to put Portland up by two (126-124).

A broken play at the final second of the game led to a long 3-point missed attempt from Lonzo Ball that followed by Brandon Ingram’s shot to tie the game at the buzzer, which was a miss as well.

Ball defended his decision to shoot the ball in the post-game media session in a contest that he finished with 21 points on 5-of-10 shooting from deep.

(via USA Today Sports):

“It was a broken play,” Ball said. “(Ingram) swung it to me. I had some space so I shot it. I don’t shoot shots to miss them and I thought it was going in, so I live with the results.

“It was supposed to be a pick and roll with (Ingram) and (Williamson). They kind of blew it up and kind of threw us off a little bit. Like I said, I had no problem with the shot I took.

I thought it was going in. We got the rebound, I got it back to (Ingram) and we ended up taking a tough one. It’s just a tough loss.”

The Pelicans were coming off a blowout victory over Memphis and a win against the red-hot Blazers would have been a great boost of confidence for Stan Van Gundy’s team.

New Orleans will face another winning squad on Friday as the take on the Phoenix Suns.
