Cavaliers’ Matthew Dellavedova could retire due to lingering effects of concussions

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Matthew Dellavedova is considering retirement as he deals with symptoms from a serious concussion he suffered on Dec. 12.

Dellavedova’s symptoms have persisted and prevented him from resuming basketball activities.

Per Joe Vardon and Kelsey Russo of The Athletic:

As recently as this week, Dellavedova’s attempts to complete a light workout had to be stopped due to dizziness and retirement has now become an option, if not likely, several sources told The Athletic.

The 30-year-old has dealt with multiple concussions throughout his career, as he missed 16 games in the 2018-2019 season.

“He’s taking steps, but they’re small steps,” Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff said about Dellavedova’s recovery last month. “With the history that he has, with the concussions, we’re taking every caution that we possibly can to make sure that he’s gonna be fully recovered first before we do anything with him.”

Dellavedova signed a one-year, $2.1 million deal with the Cavaliers last offseason.

He was also just named to Australia’s preliminary roster for the Tokyo Olympics.
