Conversations have reached a stalemate regarding the creation of an 18th roster spot for NBA teams, according to Marc Stein of The New York Times.

About two weeks ago, the NBA and NBPA began discussing the possibility of expanding rosters by adding a third two-way contract slot this season.

The idea was first brought up when several games were being postponed as a result of teams not having the league-required eight available players due to COVID-19 protocols.

NBA teams are currently allowed to carry up to 17 total players, which includes 15 players on standard contracts and two players on two-way contracts.

The league prefers that the proposed 18th roster spot should be open to players with zero-to-three years of service time with the idea of providing roster relief.

However, the NBPA wants the 18th roster spot to be open to all veteran free agents, Stein notes.

There is “concern” around the league with that idea, as it would potentially create a competitive advantage for hard-capped teams (such as the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers or Milwaukee Bucks) to add another quality player.
