Kai Sotto, a 7-foot-3 center for the G League Ignite, will opt out of the G League bubble and play for the Philippines in the final window of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.

Instead of entering the Orlando G League bubble on Jan. 26, Sotto will travel to the Philippines and play for the national team when they host South Korea on Feb. 18 and Feb. 22 and Indonesia on Feb. 20.

“The G League agreed for me to meet my previous commitments to play for the national team,” Sotto told Adam Zagoria of Forbes. “They have asked for me to immediately report back to the bubble after my last national team game.”

At the earliest, Sotto would be able to return to the Ignite at the end of February once he clears the health and safety protocols.

The G League hasn’t released a full schedule yet, but games are set to begin on Feb. 8 and playoffs run March 5-9.

By playing for the Philippines, Sotto is hoping to help them book their spot at the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup that begins in August.

The Philippines are currently 3-0 after the first two windows of qualifiers and Sotto will provide height to an undersized team looking to protect their home court.
