Kyrie Irving fined $50,000, can return to Nets Saturday

Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving has been fined $50,000 for violating the NBA’s health and safety protocols, the league announced.

The violation comes after a mask-less Irving attended a private indoor family birthday party last weekend.

The league prohibits “attending indoor social gatherings of 15 or more people or entering bars, lounges, clubs or similar establishments.”

Irving has been subject to a five-day quarantine period and he will forfeit his salary for the games missed during that time.

In his case, the result is about $410,000 per game in forfeited salary.

In total (including the fine), it will cost Irving a total of approximately $870,000.

After being away from the team due to personal reasons, it appears that Irving is nearing a return.

If Irving continues to test negative and clears protocol, he will be expected to play for the Nets against the Orlando Magic on Jan. 16, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.
