Becky Hammon wrote history as the first woman to serve as a head coach in an NBA regular-season game, as Gregg Popovich got ejected in the second quarter of the Lakers-Spurs matchup on Wednesday.
Hammon, a Spurs’ assistant since 2014 and a WNBA legend, shared her thoughts on the situation of becoming the first acting female head coach in the history of the NBA and her disappointment on not getting the win.

“I try not to look at the huge picture of it, because that can get overwhelming,” Hammon said. “It’s my job to go in there and be focused for those guys and make sure I’m doing the things that will help us win.”
“I would have loved to have walked out of there with a win for the guys,” Hammon continued. The Spurs could not stop the streaking LA Lakers, who secured their third win in the last five games (121-107).
A three-time All-American at Colorado State, Hammon played for the New York Liberty and San Antonio Stars in the WNBA as well as overseas before retiring to join Popovich’s staff in 2014.
She was the first woman to be hired as a full-time assistant coach in the history of the NBA.
