The Houston Rockets would like Gerald Green back in their uniform after being forced to waive the 35-year-old.
New head coach Stephen Silas claimed to know nothing about Green before taking over the reins but noted he’s quickly become his favorite player, one he did not want to lose.
“He’s still going to be part of the family, obviously,” Silas told reporters (via Yahoo Sports). “We’re going to figure out a way, if he doesn’t get picked up by somebody else, for him to be a Rocket, which is what he should be.”
“For someone to be here for two weeks and become one of my favorite players of all-time – who I didn’t know before I came here – he’s like everything you want. He’s ready. He has ability. He came into games and was effective. Listen, it’s just like a numbers game, really, and hopefully, he gets an opportunity to come back here to play, or whatever.”
Green has spent most of the last three years with Houston but was unable to play last season due to a broken foot. He signed a non-guaranteed deal with the team prior to training camp – cap restraints made it difficult to keep him as Chris Clemons season-ending Achilles injury made his contract a guaranteed one.
The Rockets still had a bit of flexibility to keep a player on a non-guaranteed contract but opted for DeMarcus Cousins, Jae’Sean Tate, and Bruno Caboclo instead.
“Gerald’s in the hearts of all of us,” teammate PJ Tucker said. “It’s never fun when brothers get released.”
