Bartzokas resigns as Olympiacos coach

Georgios Bartzokas has resigned as Olympiacos coach following their Greek Cup quarter-final exit against rivals Panathinaikos.

Milan Tomic will take temporary charge of the team as Olympiacos start their Greek A1 league tomorrow at home to Apollon and their Euroleague campaign at Valencia next Friday.

Bartzokas’ exit came courtesy of a 77-76 defeat to bitter rivals Panathinaikos in the Greek Cup last eight, when the Greens, who are not at full strength fielded five players born post-1994 and seven post-1990. They were missing three of their starting five and with two minutes to play were down 7 to the Reds in a game played behind closed doors.

Panathinaikos though somehow with a team vastly inexperienced came away with the win, which led to a backlash from the Olympiacos fans.

Former Olympiacos forward Pero Antic, now with Atlanta Hawks tweeted after the game:

But this video from eBasket.gr summed up their feeling towards the now ousted coach.

Bartzokas joined Olympiacos as head coach in 2012, replacing Dusan Ivkovic, who had won them the Euroleague title in Istanbul. Bartzokas equalled the Serbian’s feat by lifting the Euroleague crown a year later in London.

Despite rebuilding his squad last season, the Reds were still able to reach the quarter-finals of the Euroleague but lost in five games to Real Madrid. They lost to Panathinaikos in the Greek Finals.
