Giannis Antetokounmpo has announced that he is signing a contract extension with the Milwaukee Bucks, six days before the Dec. 21 deadline.
The two-time MVP will sign a five-year, $228.2 million supermax extension with the franchise, the largest deal in NBA history, according to Shams Charania.
The deal includes an opt-out after the fourth year, Antetokounmpo’s agent Alex Saratsis told Adrian Wojnarowski.
“This is my home, this is my city.. I’m blessed to be able to be a part of the Milwaukee Bucks for the next 5 years. Let’s make these years count. The show goes on, let’s get it,” Antetokounmpo tweeted.
Antetokounmpo joins Stephen Curry, James Harden, Damian Lillard, Russell Westbrook and John Wall as players to qualify for and sign a supermax extension.
If Antetokounmpo ultimately passed on signing the extension, he would have become an unrestricted free agent next summer and the biggest name to hit the free agent market since Kevin Durant in 2016.
Last season, the 26-year-old became the third player in NBA history to win MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season.
The Bucks have finished the regular season with the best record in the league for the last two years, but failed to reach the NBA Finals.
Antetokounmpo is hoping to take the team to the next level and bring a championship to the city of Milwaukee.
