Will Giannis Antetokounmpo three-peat for MVP?

After winning the past 2 MVP awards and now being considered one of the best players in the league, could he win it again this year? Only 3 players in league history have won 3 MVPs in a row, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, and Larry Bird, so Giannis would be joining elite company. Unfortunately for Giannis, there are a few reasons as to why I don’t think he’ll win MVP again.

First of all, his competition will be tougher this year. Luka Doncic will have obviously improved, Kevin Durant is back healthy, Steph Curry is back healthy and Kawhi Leonard will be looking for redemption. Luka will still be the main star on his team once again and I predict a much higher placed finish, than last season, for the Dallas Mavericks. This past season, they finished 7th in the Western Conference but I could see them rising to the 4th or 3rd seed. If they finish as one of the top teams in the West, it could be hard to not vote for Luka.

Then with Kevin Durant being back healthy, the Brooklyn Nets could be one of the most dangerous teams in the league. I, like most people, have high expectations for the Nets this season, and if they finished 1st in the East, I wouldn’t be surprised. The duo of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving could prove to be very deadly and with Durant being the better of the two, he will be the main player and receive most of the credit for the Net’s success.

The Warriors should be dangerous this season as well, with Steph Curry coming back healthy. Many fans think Steph won’t be the same player without Klay Thompson or Kevin Durant, but if he can prove everyone wrong and take the Warriors to a high seed in the West, he’ll very much be in with the chance of another regular-season MVP award.

A player that I think is a dark horse, though, is Kawhi Leonard. A lot of fans haven’t even thought about Kawhi Leonard as an MVP candidate, but he’s still very relevant. If the Clippers can achieve the success that was expected of them last season, then Kawhi will certainly be in the MVP conversation. If they can do the unthinkable and knock the Lakers off their Number 1 spot in the West, then Kawhi will be the most favourable candidate.

Who do I think is the favourite for MVP this season though? It’s really hard to predict so early on, as the season has not even started yet, but if I had to predict now, I would go with Luka Doncic.
