Plaza extends deal with Unicaja Malaga

Unicaja Malaga reached a new agreement with head coach Joan Plaza to keep working together until the end of the 2015-16 season, the club announced Thursday.

Plaza, age 51, was under contract until the end of the present season. He joined Unicaja last season and led it to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Top 16 and its first Spanish League semifinals appearance since 2010.

Before joining Unicaja, Plaza tried his luck outside Spain, guiding Zalgiris Kaunas to a first-place finish in its Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season group, winning the Lithuanian League title and reaching the VTB League semifinals.

Plaza also coached Cajasol Seville for three seasons, taking the team all the way to the 2011 Eurocup title game, which it lost against Unics Kazan, and to two playoffs appearances after a full decade away from it.

Plaza started his career in youth teams before being promoted to DKV Joventut assistant coach. He moved to Real Madrid to work under legend Bozidar Maljkovic and became the club’s head coach before the start of the 2006-07 season. He led Real Madrid to the Spanish League and the Eurocup titles in 2007 and reached the Euroleague playoffs in the 2008-09 season.
