This past season, Luka Dončić averaged an incredible 28.8 ppg, 8.8 apg and 9.4 rpg. He did this in only his second NBA season too, and of course, he started in the All Star game, which was fully deserved. Last season, you could pretty comfortably say that he was the best point guard in the league. But this season, Steph Curry will be back healthy for the Warriors. So who will be the best point guard this season?
The last time we saw Curry play properly, was in the 2019 Finals against the Raptors. During this 6 game series, he averaged an insane 30.5 ppg and showed why he led the Warriors to their previous 2 titles. If it wasn’t for Cousins, Thompson and Durant getting injured, the Warriors would’ve likely won but injuries happen. The injury curse then continued to spread throughout the Warriors as Curry injured his hand early on in the 2019-20 season and only played 5 games all season. However, he is back healthy now and should play the vast majority of games this season.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, Klay Thompson is likely to miss this entire season with a torn Achilles injury. So their title hopes for this season are severely diminished. Nevertheless, I predict Curry will have another standout season as one of the best in the NBA. But I think this may be the season that Luka overtakes Curry as the best point guard in the NBA.
We all know that Luka is only going to improve more this season and I believe it’s only a matter of time until he wins MVP. Personally, I’ve never seen a player make scoring look as easy as Luka does. He’s not particularly quick but can get to the basket with ease. He doesn’t have a quick release yet he can hit his step-back 3 on anyone. He doesn’t look strong but he routinely posts up and scores on his man with ease.
With Steph not having Klay this year, I predict he won’t play as well as on offense. Klay would often have a lot of attention as no team wants to leave him wide open. This year, it’s likely we’ll see Steph double-teamed more frequently which will limit the number of shots he’s able to take a game. And shooting fewer shots will mean he makes fewer shots. Every year that we’ve seen Steph excel, it’s always been with another star on his team; he’s never been the sole star on his team like Lebron or Luka. Whereas these past 2 seasons, Luka has shown that he can lead a team to the playoffs and hopefully soon, lead a team to a championship.
